Frequently Asked Questions

Thinking about joining a sorority here at SJU? Great! If the following FAQs do not answer your questions please contact us and we will do our best to provide you with an answer!

Q1:

When is recruitment?

Primary Recruitment will be held September 11th-13th, 2026, and in order to participate, you must be able to attend all three days. There is a mandatory PNM (Potential New Member) Orientation on Wednesday, September 9th at 9:15 pm. Once you register for Recruitment, you will get more information as we get closer to the start of the fall semester.

Q2:

What sororities are there at St. Joseph's University?

We are home to seven National Panhellenic chapters: Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Phi, Alpha Sigma Tau, Delta Phi Epsilon, Phi Sigma Sigma, and Sigma Sigma Sigma.

Q3:

What should I wear during recruitment?

Please refer to the recruitment page or our Instagram page @sju_panheL!

Q4:

Is there Greek housing at SJU?

SJU does not have designated housing for members of Greek-lettered organizations. Many women form close friendships within their sororities (and with women from other sororities)  and choose to live in their sophomore on-campus apartment or upperclass off-campus housing with other women in Greek life.

Q5:

How can I learn more about each individual sorority to help me decide where I belong?

There will be an optional Zoom info session in August for all women interested in finding out more about sorority life at SJU. There will also be a number of events during the first two weeks of the fall semester that we encourage you to attend. The Activities Fair is on Thursday, August 27th, there will be an all-Greek event on Friday, August 28th and each chapter will offer a “Meet the Sisters” event before Recruitment weekend. You can also follow SJU’s Panhellenic Council and each of the chapters on Instagram to get a better sense of each chapter and our community.

Q6:

How long will I be a new member?

The new member process normally lasts between 6-9 weeks and culminates with initiation when new members become actual sisters within the sorority.

Q7:

What is a Recruitment Counselor?

Recruitment Counselors (or Nu Chis) are selected from each chapter to guide the PNMs through the Recruitment process and provide an unbiased perspective throughout the weekend, as well as answer any questions or address any concerns a PNM might have. Because these leaders have already experienced all aspects of recruitment and are current members of a sorority, they are able to serve as a resource before, during, and after the recruitment process.

Q8:

Is there a GPA requirement?

For students who have earned a GPA at SJU, they must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA (no rounding) and have completed 12 credit units in order to participate. For any incoming first-year students or new transfers, you must provide your high school GPA on the registration form but there is no GPA requirement.

Q9:

How much does it cost to be in a sorority?

Each sorority has a different pricing model based on whether they are all-inclusive (you pay for everything up front) or not (lower annual dues, but you pay for everything throughout the year). SJU is not able to provide aid for students interested in being in a sorority, but each national chapter does offer financial aid options and payment plans to help make the dues more affordable.
